I’ve read that it is not possible to attach stirrups to this bareback pad, but do you offer a bareback pad that you can attach them to? I am a therapeutic riding instructor, and am looking for something exactly like this for our therapy program. I love that it doesn’t block the horses movement! Does the cinching go over the spine? Or is it independent and stitched into the sides?

Will it fit an 1800-2000 lb Draft?
-
A Thanks for your question! It's tough to answer based on your horse's weight alone, because conformation can vary so much. The girth for this pad is 24" and the side billets are 16" long from the first hole to the last. This gives a total girth reach of 56".

-

Is it possible to add stirrups?

Is it possible for me to use a Western cinch on this pad?
-
A Thanks for your question! Any cinch with a single buckle and a length similar to the original, should work for this pad. We also sell replacement cinches for $20. Give us a call @ 888-401-9101 to order.
Will it fit a mini?
-
A Thanks for your question! This bareback pad fits a wide range of horses, but is likely too large for your mini. The spine length on this pad is 23" long and the girth would likely be oversized as well.
Is it possible to get a replacement girth?
-
A Yes, we have replacement girths available for the bareback pad. Please call us at 888-401-9101 to order. Thanks!

Just an average rider in Australia. She was kind enough to send it to us. 🙂

Kayleen Diane Johnson I’m a huge fan of ThinLine! My son is learning to ride independently this summer in my ThinLine comfort plus bareback pad & I am also starting a young mare – that same bareback pad is the first piece of equipment she’s ever felt cinched on. This piece of equipment is priceless to me!
Elaine Lockhead Costello, as much as I adore your products – my favorite part is reading these kinds of articles about you. In the midst of unemployment as a single mother, I began handcrafting artisan style bitless bridles. With encouragement of family and friends – as well as – the inspiration I find in hearing your story, I took a huge leap of faith and started my own tack company. I just wanted to let you know what a positive impact following your company has had on me as I carve a niche for my own unique products & strive to build a name for my young up and coming brand. With great sincerity, thank you!

I purchased the bareback pad to help with my balance during riding. This is by far, the most comfortable bareback pad I have ever sat on. I didn’t feel a need to shift my weight off balance to get comfortable, and never felt like I was hurting or making my horse feel uncomfortable. We had a loved ride and I can’t wait to use this pad again. Excellent purchase!
Bobbi Rogers –
This bareback pad is perfect. I finally have the comfortable ride and excellent contact with my horse that I desired. I can also add that my horse moves more freely! I have recommended this product to many of my riding friends.
Sara H –
I ride a couple of horses bareback–one who is 28 with a prominent spine and one who is very round. I use a thick orthopedic pad as well with the older horse, but it was causing trouble with a standard bareback pad without wither relief. When riding the round mare with a regular bareback pad I would be sitting on the front edge of the pad (usually as it slid off the side!) within a few minutes of mounting. With the ThinLine’s shaped wither and correct girth placement (and breastcollar attachment!) I have a great bareback pad that MY sensitive back agrees with that stays PUT on both horses! Love it!
Cyndi Merka –
My 18 hand Friesian has rather tall withers, and finding a bareback pad that would fit him properly was a journey of six years. Everything else we tried failed miserably to give us a good ride, until I found this pad at a local saddlery last fall. Not only is it comfortable for my horse and myself, but it fits other horses beautifully as well. When I walk up to my horse with this pad in my hands, he responds happily, because it is one of our favorite things to do together.
Lisa (verified owner) –
Finally got to try my new pad on my 16.3 hand, high-withered mare. I. LOVE. IT. I’ve been riding bareback since Day One, but found it about impossible with this horse due to the prominence of her withers. This pad was exactly what I wanted, providing comfort for both of us! It maintains the bareback feel that I’d hoped for. Now I have another option for enjoying my mare for a quick or informal hack other than saddling up. I’m very pleased with this, my first Thin Line purchase.
Hilde Reh Stensrud, Norway (verified owner) –
I love my Thin-Line bareback pad! Its comfortable for me and for the horse. Bareback riding has become a whole new experience!
Mustang Mom –
I absolutely love my Thinline bareback pad! I’ve used another type of pad but I felt like I was slipping– not with this one though! It provides a nice grip while riding bareback. More importantly, though, is that I feel good about riding my horse bareback with the shock absorption to help my mare’s back while I ride. 🙂

Working through “Fear Free Riding”
Book Exercises using this Thin Line Bareback Pad. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Slipping pad problems GONE. I am becoming more confident and secure in my seat. My 4 horses Love it too!!
Ally –
Good weight distribution. Does not perform well in heat and hills, slips all over the place on a yoked athlete of a horse. Would be perfect if the girth attachment didn’t direct pressure across the withers and recommend a re-design with wool felt bottom and better placement of girth attachment.
elaine lockhead-castelao –
Hi Ally,
Many thanks for your comments. We are always seeking ways to improve our products. We have noted your concerns and will add them to our list of things to consider at design time.
Trish –
Hands down the best bareback pad around. Usually to get comfort on a high withered horse you need thick fluffiness, which sacrifices security and stability. With my Thinline pad, I’m completely comfortable on my shark-finned OTTB, and secure feeling enough to jump over 3′ courses!
Julia King –
Best bareback pad ever. As a youth, 11-18 I rode in various bareback pads and they all were awful. If I had this product when I was a kid I would never have ridden in a saddle-probably…. Now 30+ years later I bought this pad to teach my daughter how to ride independently and have been thrilled at the comfort. I am riding my upper level dressage horse with this and my back doesn’t hurt, my horse is more responsive, and it’s a win win all around. 🙂

Just have to say, I ordered my thinline 2 days ago and have to comment on just how impressed I am with the speed at which it arrived. As I have not used it yet, it JUST arrived in the mail and the weather is doing it’s bit to prevent an immediate usage, it looks, feels and has just the right elements of substance and stick that I know I am going to love it! Will circle back around with a review after having the benefit of actually riding on it. Thanks Thinline!
Jodie (verified owner) –
Worth every penny! When I was a kid 30-odd years ago, I had a bareback pad for my pony. It was hideously slippery and unstable, and I’m probably very lucky my pony was fairly low to the ground. I usually forewent the pad for plain old bareback. Fast-forward to now ~ I have a slightly zippy, barrel-shaped half-Arab with no withers to speak of. I still enjoy riding bareback, but the ground is a lot harder than it used to be, and further away than it was on that pony. After reading the reviews here, I decided to give the Thinline bareback pad a go. We both LOVE it! My gelding is happier without my tailbones digging into him, not to mention I don’t have to keep a death-grip with my thighs all the time. Given his roundness, I appreciate the solid D-rings that allow easy attachment of a breastcollar. Combined with the grippy pad underside, that has kept me and the pad firmly in place even during a couple of dramatic spooks and startles. I also tried the pad on one of my other half-Arabs – a much taller, leggier, leaner guy with pronounced withers. He seemed to go comfortably in it as well. Even though he’s never actually been ridden bareback before, he accepted the pad after only a few hesitant steps and walked right off. Without the pad, I’d never have tried to ride him bareback – it wouldn’t be comfortable for either of us!
Jessica Manson –
This is the best piece of tack I’ve ever purchased! I enjoy riding with this pad more than with a saddle. It is grippy and does not slip on my horse’s back. The seat is also tacky enough to make me feel extra secure while allowing me to have a super close feel with my horse’s movement. Riding with this pad 3-4x/week has not only improved my strength and balance, but my trainer remarked that it made a night and day difference in my equitation because it has made me learn how to stay “with” my horse. Worth every penny!
GK Coombs/Thoroughbred 2.0 –
I hate bareback pads. I don’t like them, they slip, they don’t help much…. Oh, wait. Someone bought this, how sad, wasted money. I will try it to be nice. WOW! WOW WOW WOW! This is NICE! I ride a lot of thoroughbreds and this has become a prized item in our barn, we ALL want to use it. Adheres to the horse, conforms to their shape, REALLY helps, looks new almost still with heavy use, WORTH THE INVESTMENT!
Cassie (verified owner) –
Feels so stable. The first time I used it the difference was noticeable. I was able to ride w/t/c and feel totally comfortable, and more balanced than usual. I actually cantered “bareback” for the first time on this! It is my favorite bareback pad by a long shot, and I even prefer it to my saddle some days! I’ve had it for a while now and it’s very durable, doesn’t slip off to the side, and the girth fits great. I don’t slip around on it either, and the cushioning makes you just want to melt.
Leanne –
Love this bareback pad! It is super comfy. I have had mine for a few years now and it has stayed in excellent condition. It has fit every horse I have put it on- from a 14 hand pony to a 17 hand draft. Super versatile and durable. Would recommend 100%!
Beth Burrell (verified owner) –
I absolutely LOVE my new Thin Line bareback pad. It is SUPER comfy with tons of padding. It stayed where I put it on at the beginning of my ride and was in the same place when we were done. My horse seemed more comfortable in it too. My last bareback pad used to slip half way down his back and shift to one side as I rode so the Thin Line Bare back Pad was a HUGE improvement! I really adore Thin Line Products they are well thought out and super nice to use. They also seem to last for forever!
Rachel Tucker (verified owner) –
I got my bareback pad in yesterday. It’s everything that I expected. It’s beautifully made and very high quality. It fits my 16 hand TWH like a glove. Both of my girls rode him with it and they said that it is comfortable. My horse loved it too. It is well worth the money.
Jennifer Emery (verified owner) –
I have been obsessed with this bareback pad since I rode in a friend’s. I waited two years to make sure it was something I really wanted (I don’t have my own horse, so I have to be careful when I make purchases!) and I am not regretting it at all. It has fit every horse I’ve put it on, and makes even my super sharp-spined lease horse comfortable to ride. The grip is just enough to help you feel secure but still provide the freedom we all love with bareback riding, and I love that it has clips for attachments as well. They actually had an inventory mixup on the website when I placed my order, so they made mine special and had it shipped out so fast.
I can’t say enough good things about the company or this pad!
Maggie Carty (verified owner) –
life-changing! My favorite piece of tack of all time. so comfortable to ride in and easy to clean.
Ashley –
LOVE this pad. Had to go a few months without a saddle this winter, so purchased this pad so we could still ride a bit while saving my horse’s back – and it’s worth every single penny. I feel incredibly secure (even more than in my saddle!), and the shock absorbency is incredible. I have a small-built extremely shark withered OTTB, on whom without a pad I can only walk and do little bits of light trot – but with this pad we were able to spend our winter doing walk/trot/canter and some light jumping. I even sat quite a few spooks, bucks, and bolts with no issue! Worth every penny.
Thoroughbred 2.0 –
The bareback pad adapts well to my OTTB backs and helps diffuse rider weight for the horse’s comfort. It’s been a useful step in rehabbing some of my kissing spine horses as well.

Bought this for my very picky and stubborn pre-teen daughter in 2020 …who for a long time refused to use it, muttering “WHY DID SHE BUY ME THIS?”. I can tell you why….she hates saddling up and prefers to ride bareback all the time. I bought it because she was constantly getting into my car with a bum full of dirt and horse hair. Fast forward 2 years when she decided to finally use it… “OMG! I LOOOOOOOOOVE THIS!” Now uses it all the time! She gets a lot of questions about it everywhere she uses it. She just says- why don’t you get up and try it! You’ll like it!
Stacy C –
I have had good luck using this bareback pad. Comfortable for my horse, and has nice grip for the rider.
Kathryn (verified owner) –
I just love my bareback pad. It’s so comfortable and helps me feel more secure, and I don’t have to walk away with those tell tale dirt/sweat marks on my butt!
sleeburgess (verified owner) –
I never rode as a kid, and got into riding at age 25. I’ve been riding lower-level dressage on my 9yo Friesian TB cross gem, but I have never ridden bareback. He has withers like a 1×4 and my sliding off sideways would be an issue. However I felt riding sans saddle would improve my feel and position.
This Thinline Bareback Pad not only helped my seat and leg, and feeling his motion, but I also didn’t feel my horse’s sharp withers. And neither I nor the pad budged: the stick is super secure on his back and under me. I used it in 2 dressage lessons and I’d do a class using this bareback pad if it was dressage legal!
It’s a great way to feel real connection with my buddy and he seemed ‘swingier’ – I felt his movement better and could move with him.
SUPER comfortable for both of us, excellent quality and quick and easy to use. Plan to use it in the summer on rainy days to save my saddle.
I think the toughest part was clambering up from the top step of the mounting block: I needed a 5-step block!
Ellen (verified owner) –
I ordered the Thinline Bareback Saddle Pad because my horse is very hard to fit with a traditional saddle, and he has been experiencing some discomfort with pretty much any saddle. When I put it on him, he was very calm and willing to see what this new thing was! The bareback saddle molded to him very well, and it is so light. When I got on him, he stepped right out, no head shaking, no lowering back, and I was very comfortable sitting on the pad rather than a traditional saddle. Thank you for this useful and comfortable tack!
Chelsea (verified owner) –
The pad is well made and very comfortable! While it does not slip around on my big warmblood at all, I slid a bit on the pad. I’ve found that I need to ride in full seat breeches to keep me in place. Absolutely not a deal breaker, it is still vastly more comfortable than any other bareback past I’ve tried!
Eliza –
My horse and I love our bareback pad! The previous one would slip to the side, which created some fun adventures. I get nervous dismounting to the ground (rather than to a retaining wall at the barn), but even with my slightly awkward dismount, the pad didn’t slip at all.
