Description

Western Felt Liner Pad

Reduces Rider Movement | Protects Horses Backs | Creates Better Saddle Fit

The thin, Western felt saddle pad liner provides more shock absorption than a 2-inch thick felt pad. Pressure points are eliminated due to less bulk, the pad is soft and flexible, allowing it to fit neatly and comfortably against your horses’ natural confirmation, and communication is reestablished. Without all that material between you and your horse you can feel each other, but all without the extra movement and “dead” feel of thick pads and gel pads. Thin enough to use as a liner. Sturdy and protective enough to use on its own.

Our felt saddle pad liner has a wither profile which is best for moderate to high withered horses and a spine-free channel, further reducing the chance of pressure points. This thin pad frees up more room for narrow or snug-fitting saddles and improves the comfort for horses even with saddles that are perfectly fitted. The ThinLine also ventilates, across the pad, allowing excess heat to move out from under the saddle.  Most importantly, to your horse, is how this pad creates stability.

What is ThinLine?

ThinLine is a thin, shock-absorbing non-slip breathable foam.  It is the only equine product endorsed by surgeons, master saddlers, riders, and veterinarians.

Where is the ThinLine?

It is sewn onto the panel of our Felt Liner.

For the Rider

This pad’s slim design puts you in closer contact with your horse, so your leg can easily drape giving you a seamless feel of his sides. You’ll notice his back moving more,  but with the extraordinary shock absorption of ThinLine, you will be moving in unison with your mount.  The ThinLine layer sewn onto the pad has a 95% shock absorption rate that spreads impact LATERALLY  along the pad. This means that the motion you feel under you as you ride is absorbed by the ThinLine and transferred ACROSS the pad instead of UP into your spine. And this same shock absorption benefit is being enjoyed by your horse as well.

With the reduced movement of your seat, your balance is easier to keep so “staying” with your horse, even during quick stops and starts, becomes second nature. You sit quieter, and he responds with a relaxed, softback, and freer strides.

For the Horse

  •  95% impact protection moves shock, weight, and heat laterally along the pad.
  • High wither profile for comfort.
  • Spine-free channel.
  • Eliminates pressure points.
  • Shimmable for fine-tuning your saddle fit.
  • Rider movement is reduced, allowing closer communication and lighter aids.

Shimming for Saddle Fit and Comfort
Full saddle fitting shims are available when you select your pad size.  These may be used as-is to double your protection or trimmed to create a pair of front, bridging, and rear shims to adjust your saddle fit.  To add saddle fit shims click here.

How do I know ThinLine is delivering the comfort and protection my horse needs?

Once you receive your Western felt saddle pad liner, ride in it for at least a week.  At first, you may simply notice things like; “my horse was great today, my seat and aids were soft and effective”, great job! you are on your way.  You will see daily improvement. But, this can be a bit subtle in the beginning.  How to check out your saddle pad’s effectiveness:  After at least a week of riding daily, begin your warm-up with the ThinLine.  Post-warm-up, remove the ThinLine, and ride.  This is when you will see just how much your horse is loving his felt saddle pad.

Felt Saddle Pad Care Instructions

Our felt saddle pads have a high percentage of wool content. To avoid shrinkage, do not use hot water to clean, or heat to dry. Occasionally brush your pad with a curry brush. This will dislodge hair, dirt, and sweat to prolong the usefulness of your pad. Wool pads can be washed by scrubbing the dirty spots with a cloth or sponge, using cold water and a small amount of mild liquid wool-washing soap (We recommend EZ All). Hose all the soap off with clean water and allow the pad to air dry in a well-ventilated area. As you’re hosing, be sure to direct the spay from the center outward toward the edges, so that dirt, sweat, and hair is moved off of the pad and instead of being pushed into the pad.

    Debbie C (verified owner)

I have ridden with a CSI pad for yrs & thought it was the best I could buy. I was wrong – this Western Felt Liner Pad by thin line is the best. My saddle does not slip, my horse is not sore in her back, and my sweat pattern is even throughout her back! I highly recommend this pad!

Thanks for your question! Horses with kissing spine are best protected when the ThinLine foam panels are combined with "cushier" materials, especially in the higher impact disciplines like barrels.

A lot of owners also like to add full-length shims to the pad for even more ThinLine comfort, without interfering with their saddle fit.

The felt used for the Western Felt Liner is a blend of natural wool and polyester fibers. The polyester increases the durability while decreasing the drying time and the price point. The natural wool adds softness, regulates temperature, and wicks moisture. All of our pads come with a great 30-day satisfaction guarantee, so please feel free to give it a try!

Thanks for your question! For well-fitting saddles and rounder horse types, we recommend riding in one of our thinner pads, so either the Felt liner or the Cotton liner would be a great choice for your Halflinger!

The ThinLine panels give you and your horse everything you need for a comfortable ride and long-term back health: 95% shock absorption, nonslip security, even weight distribution, ventilation, and pressure point protection. So you just don't need to deal with a thick, bulky pad any longer to get the comfort and protection that you're looking for!

The closer contact created by a thinner pad makes a big improvement in both feel and saddle slip! The Felt Liner and the Cotton Liner are breathable and moisture-wicking. The choice often comes down to your personal preference and other factors like spine length and maintenance.

    Pad specifics:

Felt Liner- 31.5" spine length | 1/4" wool blend felt | ThinLine panels | contoured topline | spot clean/hose cold & hang dry

Cotton Liner- 30" spine length | 3/8" quilted cotton | ThinLine panels | contoured topline | hose, machine, or hand wash cold & hang dry

Please give us a call at 919-680-6803 or email [email protected] for additional help choosing the best pad for you and your horse!

    Hi Becky,

    Thank you for your question!

The Felt Liner is a shimmable pad made with 3/8" wool felt and 3/16" ThinLine panels along the topline. Giving you a total thickness of about 1/2". The ThinLine panels are built into the pad and are not removeable.

If you're looking for an even thinner layer to give you and your horse all of the ThinLine benefits, please have a look at the new Western Perfect Fit pad.  It goes inbetween your saddle and another pad, has a great ventilating spine band and an awesome contoured topline with good clearance at the wither.  It comes in 3/16" and 1/4" thicknesses and is a single piece of pure ThinLine foam, so it isn't shimmable.

  8. Would this go under another pad if used as a liner?

  11. Q Would this go under another pad if used as a liner? answer now
    A

Our Western Liners work great under another pad.  You may also use it alone if you like as it has all the shock absorption you need.  Most of our riders use the Liner under a show  pad.

  12. Hi, how thick is the felt pad?
  13. Q Hi, how thick is the felt pad? answer now
A Thank you for your question! The Felt Liner is 3/8" thick. It's thin enough to use with another pad and supportive and durable enough to use on its own.
