Our Trim to Fit Saddle Fitting shims are sold in pairs and offer guidelines for easy trimming

  • It only takes a pair of scissors to easily trim to fit! Shims come with scoring marks as a guide for you to create pairs of the front, bridging, or rear saddle fitting shims. The trim to fit full shim is the most economical way to always have what you need for every horse.
  • If you only need to shim in one area, cut them to lay exactly where you need them in the open pocket of a ThinLine pad. The remainder can be used to add additional height by stacking several trimmed pieces on top of each other. As your horse grows and changes you now have several sets of shims for fine-tuning saddle fit.
  • Or, boost your overall ThinLine protection and comfort by using the full shim. The most cost-effective and versatile way to shim your pad!
  • If you find you no longer need inserts, just remove them and keep all the great benefits of your ThinLine Pad!
  • 3.16″ (4.8mm) thick

English Saddle Fitting Shims

We have a list of saddle fitters on our dealer page if you would like to consult with a specialist.

Bridging Shims for Swayback – If your saddle is bridging, you are missing contact in the middle of the horse’s back and there is too much contact at both the wither and the cantle. When using bridging shims, we recommend you start slowly. Use only one or two at a time. You will discover your horse will begin to lift their top line and develop more muscle with ThinLine. The result of muscle development means it is often possible to remove one or all of the saddle shims.  Good news: you keep your ThinLine pad and horses continue to use their backs correctly.

*The shape of your shims may differ from those pictured.

Selecting Shims

All shimmable pads begin with  ThinLine (3/16″, the thinnest we make) over a base pad. Each saddle pad has a pocket beneath the  ThineLine to place optional shims for fine tuning saddle fit.

The only pads without the ability to shim, are our pads made entirely out of the ThinLine foam called Basic Pads.

  • Saddle Fitting Shims are available in the thickness of ThinLine foam 3/16″
  • Each pad has a custom designed shim for a perfect fit, so be sure to select the correct pad when ordering your shims.

I have several sets of the 1/4 inch shims. They’re a perfect thickness, easy to use with all of my thin line pads, and a great way to keep the thin line technology while shimming for correct saddle fit. The shims do not compress like others and can be cut for the perfect shimming need.

I would prefer it if individual shims (front, middle, and rear) were sold instead of one big pad you have to cut to size. It isn’t easy to cut and mine turned out really badly. For the price, it should just be the size you need.

I like this pad. I think that the size you select should be done with care. It would be nice if you could order shims that were precut. this pad works nicely on top of another pad. I think I would prefer the wool fleece trifecta.

I usually use a rear half riser pad that's 6 in to correctly balance my saddle. I bought a sheepskin thinline pad for my horse. Will these shims be the right height in the back or they more like a full riser?

Thanks for your question! For the best results for you and your horse, we always recommend consulting with a qualified saddle fitter!

Please try the pad on its own first, to see how it affects the fit and balance of your saddle. If your saddle still needs to be lifted in the back, ThinLine shims can be added one layer at a time to achieve the correct balance.

  2. Picture is confusing. So this consists of 2 full shims? If you need the back, you cut the shim, then if the horse later needs the entire shim, you buy another pair? I do wish just one pair of one shims could be purchased: I need the back pair for one horse, and the entire shim for another.. and not sure what I'm ordering here. Would I have to buy 2 sets? Is medium the correct size for a CWD 17 inch seat for the half pad?

Hi Barbara, thanks for your questions!

Yes, the saddle-fitting shims are full-length and come as a pair.  They are easily customizable and can be left full length to add a complete layer of ThinLine protection or can also be trimmed to create individual pairs of front, bridging, and rear shims to adjust saddle fit.

If you'd like to have a pair of rear shims for one horse and a full-length shim for another, you'll want to purchase 2 sets of shims.

If they are being trimmed, it's recommended that owners keep the rest of the ThinLine material to have on hand to have for future saddle-fitting needs.

The medium half pads fit most 17-17.5" saddles.

  4. I have the prototypical OTTB with the high, shark fin withers and a saddle fitter suggested a rear riser pad to lift the cantle and negate some possible bridging—is the 1/4” rear shim thick enough to achieve an appreciable rear rise with the Thinline Trifecta (cotton half-pad with sheepskin rolls) and provide him with more relief and me better balance in the saddle?

I feel ya :-).  The saddle fitting shims arrive as two large pieces (basically the same size as the ThinLine portion of your saddle pad).  The beauty of this is that you can cut and stack them where you need them.  If you need a half inch lift in the back you can cut the front portion off and trim it to stack on top of the backmost area. This way you get the optimal lift in the rear of the saddle, you leave the front portion shimless and have a little for the area in the middle that could potentially bridge if you did not add some support there.  One of the great benefits of ThinLine is that you can stack away and there will be no pressure points for your horse. Happy riding.
