How the Busy Buddy for horses works
Historically we work our horses until they relax. Now we can relax our horses and then begin work.
When horses are relaxed we can see gentle chewing, licking, or saliva which looks like foam. We discovered that activating the jaw generates relaxation throughout the horse’s entire body and brain.
The Busy Buddy stimulates the relaxation process in all horses. We believe this is the most profound product for the health and well-being of horses introduced to the equestrian world.
Made of industrial, hospital-grade Latex tubing, ThinLine bit guards, elasticized rope, and 2 clips for the Halter Busy Buddy or one clip and a ring for the Bridle Busy Buddy.
Sizing:
Halter Busy Buddy: Â 28″(71.12cm)Â in length | 12″(30.48cm) of Latex.
Bridle Busy Buddy: 16.5″(41.91cm) in length | 8″(20.32cm) of Latex
If you need to shorten simply remove the hook with a pair of pliers, cut off the rope to the perfect length and reinstall the clip. Minor size adjustments; raise or lower the halter. Click HERE to watch video on adjusting the busy buddy size.
Fit: The Busy Buddy should fit loosely in the horse’s mouth, it should not pull the corners of their mouth. Find the position where they begin to chew.

Does this also work with weaning a colt from its mother
-
A
We have never tried the busy buddy for that purpose.
Can it fit on a rope halter?
-
A It has not been tested on rope halters. We know it works with nylon halters that have rings. It makes attaching the Busy Buddy easier. The beautiful thing about this product is it can be modified to work for most situations.
Does it alter the use of a bit?
-
A No, it should not be as tight as a bit. It will sit just a bit lower in the mouth with no bit interference.
Could I use this with a bitless bridle?
-
A
Most certainly!Â
can a horse hand graze with the halter attachment?
-
A
Thank you for your question! Hand grazing with the Busy Buddy works great! Allowing unsupervised eating while wearing the Busy Buddy is not recommended.Â
can this be used while riding w a fussy-mouthed horse?

I’m confused. Do you use this with the halter and not the bit? I use a roller bit with my bridle and wonder if this would be useful.? Explanations, please!

We carry two versions of the Busy Buddy, One, the Halter version has clips to attach to the halter rings. The Bridle Busy Buddy is for use with a bridle while riding or lunging and it secures behind the bit.
My horse refused to take the halter Busy Buddy. Any suggestions on how to get him to accept it? He always takes his bit without issue. thanks.

Part of the Key to a really effective Busy Buddy is to find the "sweet spot" in your horses' mouth where he wants to chew on it. Once the chewing action begins the salivary glands are activated and the horse naturally relaxes. I have used peppermint flavoring (the coffee additive works well) to the outside of the laytex for young horses. Once they see it as a treat they reach for it. Â
how do I shorten the busy buddy? I keep seeing that there's a video but I cannot find the link.

Q how do I shorten the busy buddy? I keep seeing that there's a video but I cannot find the link. answer nowA
The Halter Busy Buddy is most easily shortened simply by raising your halter. Outside of that the plastic hook can be removed by pulling on the round end at the bottom. Once it is off you can cut the rope and reinstall it.
I find the snaps for attaching the Busy Buddy to my horse's halter to be very stiff and barely large enough to fit over the rings. I have arthritis in my fingers which compounds the problem. I am pleased with the quality of it otherwise, and my horse's response to it, and will recommend it to my friends. will recommend it to my friends

Thank you for your information. We have been investigating additional companies to source the snaps and believe we now have one with a much thinner flap which should make it simpler to get over the ring. Happy to help and thank you for your contribution.
Can the bridle version be used with a flash?
-
A
So long as the flash is set really loose. The point of the Busy Buddy is to get the horses gently chewing, which they cannot do with their muzzle closed tightly via a flash.
Can you ride in the Bridle Busy Buddy?
-
A
Absolutely! Riding is what the Bridle Busy Buddy is designed for!
I have a horse that likes to bite during grooming and tacking. I've addressed all possible issues but he still gets upset during these times. Has anyone used this for that purpose? And if so, what were the results?
-
Q I have a horse that likes to bite during grooming and tacking. I've addressed all possible issues...... Read more answer nowA I bought the halter busy body for that purpose. My horse would get very nervous in the cross ties and wash rack. Using the halter busybody has been a miracle. She doesn't dance around still while being tacked up. Only slightly annoyed when cinching and somewhat calmer in the wash rack.. I really didn't think this device would work but I am very pleased. Considering the bridle buddy if you can ride with it.
Have you ever used the Busy Buddy while lunging a horse?
-
A Yes. I have used both the halter version and the bridle version while lunging. I personally really like the halter version. I can just put in on in a minute, attach the lunge line to the bottom ring of the halter and lunge away. What I like best is how quickly the horses relax their jaw, which makes them loosen and stretch over the top line much faster than lunging without the Busy Buddy.
How durable is the tubing?
-
A The original prototype is 2 years old and is hanging in a barn with 25 horses. All the vets, farriers and groomers use the same one. It looks a little used but remains quite usable.
Hi! Love that you all innovate but do you have any published research on this tool?
-
A Not sure why we would publish research on this product. It is quite a simple yet effective design. We do have a 30 day money back guarantee on every one of our products. Just try one and see how much the horses relax. If you know of anyone wanting to gather data, maybe a first year vet student needing to do a paper? , just send them our way!

Amazing little product. It just instantly relaxed my nervous guy!

I purchased these for a couple geldings that tend to play and get mouthy when being held for farrier, vet, etc. One calms right down and goes to work mouthing it and forgets about being naughty. The other works on his more aggressively and chews on it really hard. I was afraid he’d chew through the rubber but it’s holding up great so far.

Both of our horses are passable for farrier work (as our farrier has the patience of a saint), but I know they can do better. One horse detests the farrier and previously had to be sedated for any sort of foot work, but we had worked though that years ago and sedation was no longer necessary. She still was no angel about trims though and was mildly evasive and would occasionally try to take her foot back. Nothing terrible. But we always shoot for improvement to make our farrier’s life easier. As for our other horse, she has a tendency to start to look around and be unfocused, but she is quiet and very friendly. Just has a short attention span. For the friendly horse that is in general okay for the farrier, she munched on the Busy Buddy a little bit, but still needed a little guidance before she largely just stood there perfectly. The farrier and I agreed that the Busy Buddy may have helped a little, but the bottom line is that she still needed to be reminded once and she was never hard to work with anyway. I wasn’t optimistic the Busy Buddy was helping much at this point. Then came the farrier-loathing horse. She gnashed on this like crazy and seemed to appreciate something else to focus on. The Busy Buddy held up beautifully to her power chomping. She didn’t try to evade at all and stood perfectly quiet. She still looked mad at what was happening, but she tolerated it and didn’t move at all, nor did she need any help or corrections. The farrier said that this was one of her best trims. When we commented that she was really chewing on her Busy Buddy the entire time, he was keen to think that this may have been the reasoning behind her standing perfectly for him. We were left pleased with how well their hooves got done, and the farrier pleased that he spent less time convincing the horses they were fine, and more time doing what he needed to do.

The best invention for horses since stirrups. My mouthy, nippy, grabby, (but charming) Oldenburg has to be held and entertained for the farrier, and can’t stand in cross ties without biting at them in an attempt to pull them out of the wall–until now that is. The Busy Buddy magically turns him into something like an old, retired dude ranch horse. He just stands there! Took a half-hearted nip at one cross tie, and then just stopped and stood. Magic!!! I bought the larger size because my boy is big, but it is so long I had to attach it to the halter buckle, not the cheek piece as shown, but it’s just fine.

First time out it worked wonders with my mouthy OTTB who has chewed more cross ties than you can imagine. I bought the halter version and the clips are small plastic pieces. I found it really difficult to remove it from the halter ring given their small size and I fear they will break. Recommend upgrading the clips on this.

I bought this for a couple of my school horses that don’t care for all the fussing their riders give them and it has made a big difference. The only thing I would change is the snaps. I’m going to put a couple of small snaps on the ends to make it easier for everyone to attach and detach from the halter. A client also bought one also for her young horse.

Love the whole concept.
Hate the small snaps!

Helped my 26 year old gelding stay calm for the farrier and chiropractor. I’ve not seen him this relaxed during these activities in a long time.
