Unlike the typical heavy, hard, and “cage-like” apparatus common today, the Flexible Filly Slow Feed Grazing Muzzle has been redesigned from the ground up, so it’s lighter and less confining for horses.
Muzzles are an effective way to reduce a horse or pony’s grass intake (up to 83% according to one U.K. study). By reducing their grass intake, horses can cut excess body weight and lowered their risk for colic and laminitis. Muzzles can also help prevent cribbing or chewing on leg wraps, wood or blankets.
However, the problem in the past has been the heavy, hard, and “cage-like” muzzles on the market are too rigid and restricting to horses. They can cause rubbing or chafing around the horse’s nose or chin, they can get full of dirt or other debris, and they can restrict airflow or become hot and uncomfortable. All of this can lead to an unpleasant experience for the horse. The Flexible Filly Muzzle was designed to allow horses to wear a muzzle without feeling like they were actually wearing one.
ThinLine Founder, Elaine Lockhead Castelao, explains why the Flexible Filly Muzzle is so out of the ordinary, “I’ve found grazing muzzles to be rigid and archaic looking. ThinLine’s philosophy has always been to support horses with products that protect without interfering with their freedom. We approached the design of this muzzle from the perspective of the horse’s comfort and safety and the owner’s peace of mind and believe after several years of testing we’ve created a muzzle that’s effective, lightweight, flexible, durable, and easy to care for.”
Constructed of a flexible material that reduces the chance of the muzzle getting snagged, it’s rated to break just before your leather turnout halter. The supple material is also soft on equine teeth, gums, and lips, preventing tooth wear and sores. The easy breathe grazing muzzle for horses features triangular cutouts that allow for extra airflow. Because of this, when you attach the muzzle to the horse’s halter, be sure that the cutouts appear on either side of the horse’s mouth, not over his nose and under his chin. Ten, low-profile zip ties come with the muzzle so it can be easily and securely fastened to the horse’s halter.
The Flexible Filly horse slow feed grazing muzzle is ideal for slowing down speedy eaters, limiting grazing, and can help curb minor cribbing problems. The muzzle can also keep horses from chewing on leg wraps, wood, or blankets. It works extremely well with all automatic waterers and has UV protection which works much like sunscreen for those delicate noses.
“The Flexible Filly Slow Feeder muzzle is something horse owners won’t feel guilty about putting on their horses,” said Lockhead Castelao.
Flexible Filly Slow Feeder Muzzles are available online at ThinLineGlobal.com or at select equestrian retailers.
Why do you not offer buckle snap throat latch type thinline halters? Horses that don’t like to be muzzled are horrible to halter when trying to throw a strap over their head.
Thank you for your question Teresa!
The ThinLine muzzles are so comfortable and easy to wear that horses are way more willing to put them on without a fuss. It might sound funny to say about a muzzle, but lots of horses are happy to put them on to go out and graze!
To make them as safe and as durable as possible, the throat latch snap was left off of the ThinLine halters. There are fewer things to get caught on hazards in the field and less hardware to be replaced if broken.
